Pregnancy-safe skincare: what you need to know

Pregnancy is a beautiful transformation, but it also changes your skin in ways you may not expect. Hormonal shifts can trigger breakouts, pigmentation, dryness, and sensitivity. At the same time, certain skincare ingredients that were once safe may no longer be recommended.

Why your skin changes during pregnancy

During pregnancy, estrogen and progesterone levels rise significantly. This can lead to increased oil production and acne, melasma (dark patches, often called the ''pregnancy-mask''), increased sensitivity and redness, dry or itchy skin, and stretch marks.

Ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

While research continues to evolve, most medical professionals recommend avoiding the following ingredients:

  • Retinoids (retinol, tretinoin, adapalene): retinoids are linked to potential development risks when taken orally; topical use is generally avoided as a precaution.
  • High-dose Salicylic Acid: small amounts in cleansers are usually considered low risk, but high concentrations should be avoided.
  • hydroquinone: has high absorption rates into the bloodstream.
  • Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives: formaldehyde itself is classified as a carcinogen and can be irritating.
  • Certain essential oils in high concentrations: some essential oils can cause hormonal disruption when used in high concentrations, such as clary sage, rosemary, basil, and peppermint.

When in doubt, consult your healthcare provider.

Pregnancy-safe ingredients to look for

Instead, choose supportive, nourishing ingredients like:

  • Hyaluronic Acid: hydrates without irritation.
  • Vitamin C: helps brightness and pigmentation.
  • Niacinamide: supports barrier and reduces redness.
  • Zinc-oxide: safe mineral sunscreen protection.
  • Natural oils like argan oil: rich in vitamin E and fatty acids.

Protect your skin during pregnancy by simplifying your routine, focus on barrier repair, use mineral sunscreen daily, hydrate consistently, and avoid harsh exfoliation.

One product many people forget to check? Lip balm!

Because it sits directly on your lips, small amounts are ingested throughout the day. This makes ingredient quality especially important during pregnancy.

Our Argan Oil Infused Lip Balm is formulated with nourishing oils and ingredients that don't raise pregnancy safety concerns. Since lip products are applied so frequently and so close to the mouth, choosing a clean formula matters the most.

For soft, hydrated, and safe lips, try our Argan Oil Infused Lip Balm.
